Research exercise: What's the meaning of meh?

"Meh" is a commonly used word in the Simpsons universe. In the episode "Hungry Hungry Homer", Homer asks Bart and Lisa if they want to go to Blockoland:

  Bart and Lisa together: Meh.
  Homer: But the TV gave me the impression that...
  Bart: We said, "Meh!"
  Lisa: M-E-H, meh.

In the light of our discussion of Croft's Utterance Selection Theory search the internet for a definition of the word meh and try to find reasons for how and why it got integrated into the English language.
