Charles Talbut Onions
Onions was born in 1873 in Edgbaston, in the West Midlands. He visited both the University of London where he received his M.A. and the University of Oxford where he received an honorary doctorate.
In 1895 Onions joined Murray’s staff of the New English Dictionary and from 1914 on he worked independently as an editor with his own assistants. Onions worked with William Craigie on the first Supplement to the New English Dictionary which was published in 1933. Aside from his work on the Dictionary he was editor of the journal Medium Aevum. In 1965 Onions died and his last work, The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology, was published one year later.
