Task 3: How to Borrow Words
New words that originated in Latin were introduced via two methods of Morphological Anglicisation. Derive the English lexeme from the Latin word forms and lay down a rule for the following process! Copy the table below on a sheet of paper. Compare your results with the solution below.
Method 1
Latin word form | English lexeme |
constrictionem | |
expungere | |
immaturus | |
terrificus |
RULE:

Method 2
The second method also changed the Latin suffixes and replaced them by terminations that first appeared in the Middle English period via French.
The following table depicts this process of anglicising Latin nouns and adjectives:
Latin endings | English endings | Examples |
-itas | -ity | immaturity |
invisibility | ||
-entia | -ence | transcendence |
-ency | delinquency | |
-antia | -ancy | relevancy |
-abilis | -able | inviolable |
-ibilis | -ible | susceptible |
The process of dropping Latin suffixes or exchanging Latin suffixes with English ones is called adaptation (cf. Baugh/Cable 1993, 219).
