The Use of Abbreviations in SMS-Communication

Abbreviations:

  • graphological
    • u = you,
    • b4 = before,
    • f2f = face to face

  • eye dialect (when you see it you know how you pronounce it)
    • biste = bist du,
    • see ya = see you

  • shortening of special words
    • acronyms (e.g. UN = United Nations)
    • clipping (e.g. Prof = Professor)

  • syntactical
    • ellipses (e.g. love you = I love you)
    • one-word-sentence ("Hungy?", "Lunch?")

      • Typical for SMS-Abbreviations: leaving out signs and phonemes.
