The Neo-Anglicist Hypothesis (1990s)

  • The Neo-Anglicist Hypothesis is a modification of the Anglicist Hypothesis.

  • Similar to the Anglicist Hypothesis, the Neo-Anglicist Hypothesis maintains a British origin for AAVE which, in its early version, resembled the early British dialects brought to North America.

  • AAVE since then is seen as having diverged from Anglo-American varieties primarily in the 20th century so that today it is fundamentally different from contemporary white American varieties. Accordingly, many of the characteristic features of current AAVE are the result of recent developments instead of retention of original British dialect features.
