Omission test for VPs: VP-deletion (VP-ellipsis)


Basis of test

If two sentences have identical VPs, the second VP can be omitted.

John should take the blame but Sally might.
* John should take the blame but Sally not.
(This example again demonstrates that the modal is not part of the VP.)
