The structure of IPs

Look at the following examples:

a) John decided [IP to work as a linguist].
b) The man announced that [IP he would hand in his notice].
c) When will [IP John leave England]?
d) John wanted [IP Mary to write his term paper].

For each IP, identify the element that is situated in the head position and indicate the abstract features on the the head I°. List the complement and specifier. Name the category of those heads, complements and specifiers that are overtly realised

  • If the head is not overtly realised, or if specifiers are absent, insert "/". Use "t" for traces.
  • To indicate the abstract head features, choose from the following list of abbreviations: (+tns/+agr); (-tns/-agr); (+WH); (-WH); (+poss).
  • Use the following abbreviations to indicate the category: NP, DP, VP, AP, PP, AdvP, IP, CP for phrases. If heads or specifiers are not lexically realised, insert "/". Insert "t" for traces and "PRO" where necessary.
