Basic Units of Syntactic Analysis: Words and Sentences
Syntax is concerned with the combination of words into sentences. Consequently, the word is the smallest unit of syntactic analysis, and the sentence is the largest. While we have intuitive ideas about these two notions, it is difficult, if not impossible, to give a precise, theory-independent definition.
