Draw the Syntactic Structure

In our example sentence:
For the most part, we can use the constituents as identified in the tests. But we must insert the following non-branching nodes:

• N': history teacher
• AdvP: tomorrow
• NP: Pat

In general:

• The tests for phrasal categories may lead to a double classification for some words or word groups. In this case, there must be guidelines of how to reflect this in the tree structure.
• Here, we assume that doubly classified words or word groups will give rise to non-branching nodes whose only daughter is the head.
• Note: This assumption is shared in Government and Binding Theory. In Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar this type of non-branching nodes is often avoided.
